Tomas + Brittanie | Romantics Editorial | Gavin Wade Stylized Shoot Part I | Las Vegas, NV
One of the best things about WPPI is the sheer volume of opportunities to expand your portfolio, grow as a photographer, and meet new friends-all OUTSIDE of the actual conference! Before I even bought my airline tickets to Vegas, I signed up for a stylized photo shoot hosted by the awesome Erin and Gavin of Gavin Wade Photographers.
On my 2nd day of WPPI U, I played “hooky” from one of my classes to join 30 other photographers in a caravan to a dry lake bed just outside Vegas. After fretting about the forecast, we couldn’t have asked for better weather.
I’m still wondering how I got stuck in the white creeper van when our group also had two Escalades? Hmmm… But it’s okay because our van was full of the best group of photographers. 😉
Once we got settled in, we had the option to photograph either a high fashion model or a real couple in their bridal attire (yes, that gorgeous gown is Brittanie’s actual wedding dress!). I went straight to the couple. Brittanie and Tomas were amazing models. Good-looking AND head over heels in love with each other? Yes, please!
The group shoot challenged me in ways I’ve never been challenged. Not only did I have the usual task of picking the appropriate exposures, angles, and composition, but I also had to be creative in getting the models to do what I wanted when at least 15 other photographers were directing them as well. Not to mention just finding an open spot to shoot from!
If you’re thinking of participating in a group shoot, I’d suggest renting or bringing along your 70-200. My longest lens was an 85, so I couldn’t get in as close as I wanted in some shots without “manually zooming” (by walking closer to my subjects) and running the risk of being in the other photographer’s shots (a BIG group shoot no-no!). The following image was actually taken with my 85 from a great distance and cropped in. Thanks to my camera’s high resolution, I was able to crop this shot in the manner I wanted without causing a big pixelated mess.
Remember how I mentioned not getting in anyone’s shot? Well, there IS one exception…
…and that exception is if you’re a renowned international photographer commanding commissions of $20k or more.
Don’t worry Mike. I won’t hold it against you, especially since you graciously answered my question during Mike Larson’s platform class. 😉
Stay tuned for Part II of the Gavin Wade stylized shoot which is all about high fashion!
And I must give credit where it is most certainly due. Without these amazing people, this fabulous shoot just would not have happened:
